The photographer is on a shore excursion from a cruise ship and is looking north-west across the main square at Kongsgata showing the regular market in full swing with many stalls set up and crowds of people. A rail mounted crane is on the Skagenkaien on the right and a coastal passenger/cargo steamship, possibly owned by Hardanger Sunnhordlandske Dampskipsselskap, is alongside the quay. A 2-masted schooner and two coastal steamships, owned owned by Det Bergenske Dampskibsselskab, are alongside the Strandkaien on the left.
