A very distant view of a topsail schooner and two spritsail barges at the mouth of the River Tyne during the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race in July 1993. The square rigged topsails are set on the schooner. Two spritsail barges can be seen with their sails furled and bowsprit raised, moored off the starboard quarter of the schooner. A schooner with its foresails unfurled can be seen sailing past the South Shields Lighthouse. There are a number of small craft moored in the background. A small number of motor boats and yachts are sailing off the port side of the schooner. In the foreground are a group of seated and standing people on the quayside observing the sailing ships. The South Shields Pier can be seen in the background.
