A view of a topsail schooner and two spritsail barges at the mouth of the River Tyne during the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race in July 1993. One of the spritsail barge is situated on the left hand side of the image. The square rigged topsails of the spritsail barge are unfurled whilst the rest of the sails are furled. The second spritsail barges can be seen off the bow of the first on the far left side of the image. A schooner with its foresails unfurled can be seen sailing past the South Shields Lighthouse. There are a number of small craft moored in the background. A small number of motor boats and yachts are sailing off the port side of the schooner. In the foreground are a group of seated and standing people on the quayside observing the sailing ships. The South Shields Pier can be seen in the background.
