Four manual lifeboats alongside the Orient Line cruise ship Orion (1935) in Sognefjord off Balholm, Norway.
Four of the ship's lifeboats alongside the Orient Line cruise ship Orion (1935) in Sognefjord off Balholm, Norway. The photographer is on the port side of the main deck aft looking over the ship's rail forward and down showing the manual lifeboats rafted alongside each other at the foot of the accommodation ladder. They are manned by members of the ship's crew and none of the occupants are wearing life jackets. The boats are about to take part in a ship's regatta and they all have their oars tossed. One of the ship's motor lifeboats is preparing to tow the boats to the start line of the race. Competitive rowing regattas were commonplace in cruise ships at boating ports and other sheltered moorings. Negatives numbers P84445 to P84462 inclusive were taken on the same occasion.
