Loading Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company passengers' baggage at Berth 31 in Tilbury Docks, Essex
Loading Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company passengers' baggage at Berth 31 in Tilbury Docks, Essex. The photographer is on board an unidentified P & O cruise ship looking forward and down over the starboard side rail of the aft promenade deck showing stevedores transferring luggage from a railway luggage van into a cargo net on the quayside which will be hauled aboard using the ship's own derricks. Five bowler hatted gentlemen, two men wearing trilbys, three railwaymen and a man in a peaked cap, possibly one of the ship's officers, are watching the stevedores at work. Two gangplanks are laid on the quayside and a motor lifeboat is on the quay in the background. In the foreground the Port of London Authority's Hudswell Clarke & Co Ltd manufactured 0-6-0 tank locomotive number 60, built in 1917, is shunting a railway baggage coach. The P.L.A. tug Sirdar (1899) is berthed ahead of the cruise ship. A vertical format negative.
