The Campanile is the bell tower of St Mark's Basilica located in the Piazza San Marco and is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. The photographer is looking north-west-by-north from the San Marco Basin showing a number of gondolas in the foreground hoping to pick up passengers. On the Riva degli Schiavoni on the right are the Gran Caffe Orientale, the American Express Company and the Hotel Royal Danieli.
