The photographer is on a shore excursion from the Orient Line cruise ship Orontes (1929) and is looking south from the citadel showing the La Darse harbour enclosed by a stone breakwater which is known as the Promenade des Professeurs. Leisure craft of various types, including a 2-masted schooner yacht, are berthed in the harbour as well as a large number of rowing boats.
