Tartu (captured 1797), later Uranie.

Scale: 1:48. A plan showing the headrail, head and proposed figurehead for Tartu, later Uranie (captured 1797), a captured French 38-gun Fifth Rate frigate. While the ship was registered as Tartu (Tortue) in April 1797, the plan still uses the French name. The frigate was renamed Uranie in November 1798, just over a month after this was drawn. The ship was fitted at Plymouth between July 1798 and April 1799. The ‘No. 2’ written at the top of the plan, as it was an alternative proposal for submission. The left side of this sheet, which includes the date and dockyard and Design No. 1, is DIC0015.

The colour-washed figurehead is a naval cannon on its carriage draped with a Blue Ensign Standard with a Red Ensign Standard on the port side. Behind the carriage and ensigns is a thin branch with oak leaves and acorns. The whole figurehead is supported by an ornate base, underpinned by the carved work at the top of the lower cheek on the trail-board.
