Endymion (1797)
Scale: 1:48. A plan showing the head and top section of the trail-board with a figurehead for Endymion (1797), a 50-gun Fifth Rate, frigate. The plan is undated but it may relate to a proposed replacement for the ship when under repair at Plymouth Dockyard, December 1803-April 1804, or under Middling to Large Repair from May 1812 to July 1813.
The figurehead is a full-length bearded male facing forwards with his left arm extended above his head. He is holding a cross-staff in his right hand, symbolising Endymion’s relationship with Selene, the moon-goddess. Endymion is wearing nothing but a cloak that wraps around his waist, over his left shoulder and billows behind to his feet. He is standing on a piece of foliage.
