Unknown ironclad (circa 1860s)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the starboard side at forecastle level with an ornate bow cartouche and crown for an unidentified ironclad (circa 1864). The bottom of the plan and the area behind the cartouche has been cut away.
The ‘figurehead’ is a representation of the Imperial State Crown over a large curved cartouche encircled by laurel and oak leaves. A Union Flag on a short jack partly obscures the cartouche.
Signed by Alexander Moore [Assistant Master Shipwright, Chatham Dockyard, 1859-]. The plan includes an Admiralty Letter Book number DM 6388-64.
The identity of the ship is unknown. It does not match the known ‘figureheads’ of ironclads from the 1860s in the Museum’s photographic collection. This suggests that it was nothing more than a proposal.
