Unknown Third Rate, two-decker (circa 1770s)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the bow, headrails, trail-board and figurehead for an unknown Third Rate two-decker (circa 1770s).
The full-length figurehead depicts a Greco-Roman warrior holding a ‘parma’ (circular shield) in his outstretched left hand, and a short sword over his shoulder in his right hand. A stylised plumed helmet obscures the face. The warrior is wearing a patterned ‘cuirass’ (breastplate) and long ‘pteruges’ (skirt of leather or fabric strips) over his tunic to protect his upper legs. He has a sandal on his right foot (and presumably on the left, which cannot be seen in the illustration).
The trail-board consists of the spoils of war, including swords, helmets and a standard with a laurel wreath hanging from it. A reclining nude young herald is holding the standard and blowing a trumpet.
