Tartarus (cancelled 1864)
Scale: 1:48. A plan showing the bow, headrail, head and proposed figurehead for Tartarus (cancelled 1864), a First class screw Gunboat. The ship was ordered in 1860, as was the figurehead - hence the letter date. However the ship was cancelled in December 1864.
The figurehead is a three-quarter length bust of a nude bearded male facing forward, wearing a coronet. The figurehead has a cloak over his shoulders with both top edges of the cloak pinned by a broach over his right shoulder. He represents both Tartarus the deity and the place below Hades in Greek mythology where the Titans and others who sinned against the Gods were held.
The plan includes Admiralty Letter Book numbers S7194/60.
