Research (1863)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the bow and carved head decoration for Research (1863), a 4-gun wooden-hulled, sloop-rigged, central battery ironclad. The ship was built at Pembroke Dockyard, but completed and fitted at Devonport between August 1863 and April 1864.
A large curved cartouche with stylised fronds framing the edges. The centre is a depiction of a young woman with her hair tied back into a bun at the nape of her neck with ribbons. While the face cannot be seen, the style of the carving is reminiscent of Classical carvings of young women. A semi-circular wave of palm fronds contains a half-length female nude blowing a trumpet. A ribbon that would contain a motto is below the trumpeter and cartouche.
Signed by James P. Peake [Master Shipwright, Devonport Dockyard, 1859-]. Approved by Edward J. Reed [Chief Constructor of the Navy, 1863-1870] on 24 September 1863. Admiralty Letter Book number DM6383.
