Espoir (1860)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the starboard stern quarter gallery, bow, headrail, head and proposed figurehead for Espoir (1860), a 5-gun screw Second Class gun vessel.
The figurehead is a three-quarter length bust of a female, representing ‘Hope’, facing forward. She is in a close-fitting bodice with pleated skirts that wrap around the ornate scroll carving below. A cloak flows down her back to the trail board. Hope wears a diadem (or tiara) on her head, tied at the back by a ribbon. An anchor is at the top end of the trail-board, emphasising the representation of Hope.
The stern galleries are unornamented. The plan includes the references with dimensions for carving the figurehead. The sketch was appoved by Symonds - 'Approv'd' in faint pencil is to the right of the figurehead.
Signed by Henry Cradock [Master Shipwright, Pembroke Dockyard, 1859-1864]. The plan includes Admiralty Letter Book numbers S2183-59 / 2447.
