Caesar (1793)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the starboard bow, headrails and figurehead for the Caesar (1793), an 80-gun Third rate, two-decker.
The figurehead is a full-length portrayal of Julius Caesar wearing a laurel wreath of Victory on his head. He is in stylised Roman armour, with a tasselled cloak flowing down his back. He holds a shield in his left hand and a drawn sword in his right. The trail-board depicts a merman reclining, holding a trident, and blowing into large shell. The head of a sea-monster (possibly a rendering of a dolphin) appears at his feet.
The sketch has an annotation in the bottom right corner: ‘Julius Caesar in a Roman habit with his proper Attributs [sic]’.
