Zealous (1864)
Scale: 1:48. A plan showing the bow and proposed figurehead for Zealous (1864), a wooden-hulled ironclad central battery frigate. This figurehead design superseded the one proposed by the Hellyer’s because the ship was converted on the stocks from a 91-gun Second Rate two-decker, resulting in a change in the bow shape.
The figurehead is an escutcheon under the bowsprit with crossed flags inside. The front half of a reclining lion is within the stylised foliage frame. Behind the lion is the top half of a crowned female figure holding a flaming torch in front of her possibly representing Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, whose search for her kidnapped daughter Persephone may be the inspiration for 'zealous'.
Signed by James P. Peake [Master Shipwright, Devonport Dockyard, 1859-]. The plan includes an Admiralty Letter Book numbers DM2408 and DM6388-64.
