Royal George (1827)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the bow, headrail, head and proposed figurehead for Royal George (1827), a 120-gun First Rate three decker, converted in 1852-3 to a screw battleship and then cut down to an 89-gun two-decker in 1860. This figurehead proposal, the first of two, relates to the last configuration of the ship and was approved.
The figurehead is a bust of a crowned male representing King George III. He is in civilian clothes with a high neck stock and his hair tied back at the nape of his neck. The king is wearing the Order of the Garter collar (chain) and sash over his jacket. The cloak to the bust’s right, partly draped over the carved scroll at the top of the trail-board, includes the star of the Order of the Garter. The plan includes measurements in pencil for scaling the figurehead.
Signed by James P. Peake [Master Shipwright, Devonport Dockyard, 1859-]. The plan includes an Admiralty Letter Book number S3906.
