Donegal (1858)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the bow, headrails, trail-board and figurehead for Donegal (1858), a 91 Second Rate, screw two-decker, converted from a 90-gun Second Rate.
The half-bust figurehead shows a male figure in naval uniform with bullion epaulettes and a sash from the right shoulder that goes under the wide lapel. The sitter is unidentified, but Rear-Admiral Pulvertaft suggests in his book on Royal Navy figureheads that it could represent Sir John Borlaise Warren, who was the victor at the battle of Donegal in 1798. If this is the case then the sash will be from the Order of the Bath, which he was awarded in 1794.
This is design proposal ‘No. 1’, which was approved. Design No. 2, also in this collection, was not approved.
Signed by W. Edye [Master Shipwright, Devonport, 1843-1859]. The plan includes an Admiralty Letter Book number S3081.
