Figurehead sketches of Hermes and an unidentified warrior.
Scale: unknown. Two colour-washed sketches of proposed figureheads standing on foliage for unknown warships. The sketches do not include the bow, head-rails or head for the ships they are proposed for.
The top sketch is a port-side full-length figurehead of Hermes wearing a breastplate and billowing cloak that he has caught the side of in his left hand. He is wearing the winged plumed helmet and winged sandals associated with Hermes as messenger of the Gods. In his right hand is his caduceus – a short staff entwined with two snakes.
The lower sketch is port-side full-length figurehead of an unidentified Greek warrior. He is wearing scale armour, and a plumed helmet. He has a small arm shield over his left forearm and a short sword in his right. A cloak is billowing out from his shoulders but is also partially trapped behind a belt.
