Caledonia (1865)

Scale: 1:48. A plan showing the starboard bow with proposed alterations to the carving for the Caledonia (1862), a wooden-hulled ironclad frigate, converted from a 91-gun Second Rate with an additional 21ft section added when in frame. The proposed alteration to the figurehead coincided with the ship being fitted out at Plymouth between April and July 1865 before it went to the Mediterranean.

The figurehead carving is a boarded shield or crest with no detail in the centre and a ribbon below. A stylised foliage branch curves upwards from the top left corner of the shield. Large standards on spears jut out at an angle from the lower stylised foliage branch. One of the standards includes the Cross of St. Andrew. A thistle with leaves is in the foreground to the right of the first standard. The muzzle of a cannon is lying horizontally below the Cross of St. Andrew.

A pencil annotation at the top left corner states: ' "Caledonia" Alteration in carved work in Red.' The addition in red ink consists of the inclusion of claymores, a round shield, a gun muzzle with fixed bayonet, and a flaming torch. Above this is a large horizontal stylised ostrich plume or foliage.

Signed by Alexander Moore [Master Shipwright, Devonport Dockyard, 1865-]. The plan includes Admiralty Letter Book number DM 2963-65
