Royal George (1827)

Scale: 1:48. A plan showing the bow, headrail, head and proposed figurehead for Royal George (1827), a 120-gun First Rate converted to a screw battleship between 1852-53. This figurehead was proposed when the ship was cut down to an 89-gun screw two-decker at Plymouth Dockyard in 1860.

The figurehead is a half-length bust representation of King George IV in military uniform without a crown. The uniform includes the high stiff collar with oak leaf designed lace on it, brocade looping from the buttons of the jacket over the right shoulder. He is also wearing the Order of the Garter sash and an unidentified Maltese cross-style medal suspended on a ribbon at his throat. A pencil annotation at the bottom of the plan indicates that this was not approved.

Signed by James P. Peake [Master Shipwright, Devonport Dockyard, 1859-]. The plan includes an Admiralty Letter Book number S3906.
