Flora (1844)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the head, head-rails and trail-board and figurehead for Flora (1844), a 36-gun fifth Rate frigate. The ship was in Ordinary at Plymouth from her launch in 1844 until 1864 when it was ordered to be fitted to replace the guard ship at Ascension Island. The date of this figurehead proposal may coincide with the beginning of the Crimean War (October 1853-February 1856) when the Navy was mobilising ships.
The figurehead is a three-length female figure facing forwards. She has her hair tied in a bun at the nape of her neck and a band of flowers around the crown of her head. She is wearing a close-fitting bodice and pleated skirt below the waistband. A short cloak covers her arms and curls around the top of the foliage scroll at the top of the trail-board.
Signed by W. Edye [Master Shipwright, Devonport, 1843-1859]. The plan includes Admiralty Letter Book number S7449.
