Saint George (1840)

Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the bow, head, headrails, trail-board and figurehead for Saint George (1840), when converted from a 120-gun three-decker sailing ship to an 89-gun three-deck screw Second Rate. The figurehead was created for the ship after conversion.

The three-quarter length figurehead of Saint George, patron saint of England and known dragon slayer, shows a bearded warrior in a square-necked scale chainmail shirt with a lion’s head on the upper arm. He wears an ancient Greek-style helmet with a dragon in the place of the plume. An annotation on the plan indicates that this was an approved design. It also includes scale measurements for the carver.

Signed by W. Edye [Master Shipwright, Devonport, 1843-1859]. The plan includes an Admiralty Letter Book number S4598. The approval of the design and the estimate of £35.0.0. are recorded in ADM 91/21 and ADM 88/14.
