Enterprise (1864)

Scale: 1:48. A plan showing the stern board and starboard bow with carved work for Enterprise (1864), a wooden-hulled ironclad central battery sloop.

The figurehead is a three-quarter length figurehead of a male Greek warrior facing forward. He is wearing a scale armour shirt and wide stiff-leather ‘pteruges’ (panels) at his waist. A cloak flows down his back and around the stylised foliage curl behind the figurehead. The warrior is wearing a solid helmet with a short spike at the top and a wide peak at the front. He has a short sword in his right hand.

The stern decoration is within stylised foliage and scroll work. It consists of a central female in a short pleated dress with the left shoulder and breast exposed. Her left elbow is resting on a globe, and her right arm is extended out and she is holding a crown. Below her and the globe is a rectangle with ‘NEWTON’ in it. A three-decker warship with its lower masts and lower section of the bowsprit is partially obscured behind the figure. In the foreground on the left is a sextant, partially hidden by an open book. On the right is a cannon muzzle with rammer, the hilt of a sword, and a ship’s log.

Signed by James P. Peake [Master Shipwright, Devonport Dockyard, 1859-]. The plan includes an Admiralty Letter Book numbers DM3803.
