Saint Jean d'Acre (1853)

Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the head, head-rails and trail-board and proposed figurehead for Saint Jean D’Acre (1853), a 101-gun Second Rate, two-decker building at Devonport Dockyard.

The figurehead is a bust of King Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) in medieval military uniform. He is wearing a crown over a chainmail collar that reaches down to his shoulders. His chainmail shirt is mostly covered by a tabard that has three lions passant-guardant, which were his coat of arms. A flowing cloak wraps around the base of the bust and down the side of the scrollwork of the trail-board. A sword in a scabbard is drawn at the top of the trail-board. Richard I was at the capture of Acre in 1191.

An unclear pencil annotation at the bottom says 'Not app'd [approved] / The conqueror[?] -?- as -?- only one lion and breast.'

Signed by W. Edye [Master Shipwright, Devonport, 1843-1859]. The plan includes Admiralty Letter Book number S5368.
