Squirrel (1853); Rover (1853)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the head, head-rails and trail-board and proposed figurehead for Rover (1853) a 16-gun First Class Brig, and a separate sketch for Squirrel (1853), a 16-gun Second Class Brig, both building at Pembroke Dockyard.
The top figurehead is a bust of a bearded male facing forward. He is wearing a simple straw hat and an overcoat on top of a collared shirt.
Signed by Richard Abethell [Master Shipwright, Pembroke Dockyard, 1844-1853]. The plan includes Admiralty Letter Book numbers S1538 /1630.
The lower figurehead is a bust of a female facing forward. She is wearing a short-sleeved top and cradling a squirrel in her folded arms. A veil flows down her back and around the top of the scrollwork at the top of the trail-board. Her hair is plaited at the front, looped down towards her ears, and the back of the hair is tied into a bun at the nape of her neck. A larger and clearer sketch below the measurement table provides clarity for the design.
