Thunderer (1831)

Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the bow, headrails, trail-board and a replacement figurehead design for Thunderer (1831), an 84-gun Second Rate, two-decker. The plan notes that the original was rotten and that the replacement is a copy of the old figurehead. The ship underwent a 'Very Small Repair' at Plymouth (Devonport) Dockyard between August 1847 and January 1848.

A half-length bust of a male figure with a naked torso and a beard. He is wearing a crown. A group of thunderbolts with a central disk are on the trail-board. This could be a loose representation of Zeus/Jupiter, who was associated with thunder and in Greco-Roman culture depicted with a beard.

Signed by W. Edye [Master Shipwright, Devonport, 1843-1859]. The plan includes an Admiralty Letter Book number S3222.

The plan is also signed by John Edye [Assistant Surveyor of the Navy] with his note ‘Design approved but rather too large for the knee of the Head.’
