Caesar (cancelled 1852)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the head, head-rails and trail-board and proposed figurehead, and half-stern board and starboard quarter galleries for Caesar (cancelled 1852), a 90-gun Second Rate, two-decker prior to being cancelled and the name transferred to the redesigned hull as a 91-gun screw battleship.
The figurehead is a half-length bust of bearded Roman warrior in armour. The warrior is wearing a plumed ornate helmet and a scale armour shirt. The right shoulder piece is the head of a lion, with ‘pteruges’ (stiff leather strips) around the armhole. A short cutlass-style sword has been drawn below the lower trail-board cheek. A cloak flows down the back of the figurehead and around the top of the scrollwork and across the warrior’s waist.
The stern board and starboard quarter gallery have carved foliage ‘drops’ between the two tiers of windows.
Signed by Richard Abethell [Master Shipwright, Pembroke dockyard, 1844-1853]. The plan includes Admiralty Letter Book numbers S363 / 986.
