London (1858)
Scale: 1:48. A starboard side view of the bow, headrails and figurehead of HMS London (1857) a 91-gun screw Second Rate two-decker, converted from a 90-gun Second Rate sailing ship. The figurehead relates to the period of London’s conversion at Devonport Dockyard between 1857 and 1859.
The figurehead is a three-quarter length bust of a female representation of the City of London. She is wearing a ‘mural crown’ that may represent the Tower of London. The City of London crest is on the trail-board below the flowing robe.
Signed by W. Edye [Master Shipwright, Devonport Dockyard, 1843-1859]
The sketch includes an Admiralty Letter Book reference S822, which relates to an approved request for a replacement figurehead as the original one was rotten [TNA, ADM 88/13].
