Orlando (1858)
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing a half stern-board, starboard quarter, and bow, headrail, head and proposed figurehead for Orlando (1858), a 40-gun, screw Fourth Rate frigate.
The figurehead is a three-quarter length bust of a male warrior wearing a breast plate with leather straps over the shoulder. His helmet has a large feather plume and high frontal peak to the brow. The tunic below his waist is pleated and curves around the scroll work at the head of the trail-board. The figurehead represents the warrior Orlando from a fifteenth century Italian epic romantic poem by Matteo Maria Boiardo.
The stern board and starboard quarter have not been completed with proposed carving details. The plan has the Admiralty Letter Book number S14196.
