A pocket refracting telescope and case.
A pocket refracting telescope with leather case. The telescope is constructed with three brass draws, and has a mahogany-bound brass mailing tube into which the draws slide. The leather carrying case has a detachable lid and the carrying strap for the lid has been lost. The telescope has an un-extended length of 140mm.
This telescope may have been used by Admiral Sir George Back (1796-1878) during one of the three overland expeditions that he participated in or, in the case of the 1833-1835 expedition, led. He does mention the use of a telescope during the 1833-35 expedition but does not specify the size or the make.
