Two manual lifeboats from the Orient Line cruise ship Orontes (1929) racing in Sognefjord off Balholm, Norway. The photographer is on board the Orontes looking across the fjord as the lifeboats are rowed along the course past the ship. Each manual lifeboat is manned by sixteen passengers supervised by two of the ship's crew. A further two manual lifeboats are trailing astern and are out of the picture. A motor tender is keeping pace with the rowers, acting as a safety boat. Two local double ended rowing boats are in the foreground.
