Lifeboats setting off from the Orient Line cruise ship Orion (1935) for a race in Sognefjord, off Balholm, Norway. The photographer is in a motor lifeboat which is towing the manual lifeboat number 6 and two other boats in line astern and they are heading for the start line of the race. Each of the manual lifeboats is manned by sixteen passengers under the supervision of two crew members and they are proceeding with oars tossed. The starboard side of the stern of the Orion (1935) is on the right of the picture and she has an accommodation ladder rigged aft. The davits for lifeboat 17 are turned out and empty. Passengers are lining the rails to watch the departure of the boats. A vertical format negative.
