A sketch from the 'Castilian'. It shows the effects of light on the surface of the water. The sketch is a tonal experiment in pale grey and lilac with the waves on the water implied by small brush strokes. The light sky is reflected in the water in the foreground. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Castilian', from London to the Mediterranean, between October 1937 and February 1938. This was his last journey to sea, probably because of World War II. The painting is inscribed 'Castilian 37' verso. See also BHC0177.
