A sketch from the 'Castilian'. It shows a calm sea, with waves painted as a rhythmic diagonal across the picture. A sailing boat is visible silhouetted against the horizon. The sketch is concerned with visual balance and tonal harmony as well as the contrast between the sea and sky. The sky is bathed in light with streaks of colour to indicate clouds. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Castilian', from London to Mediterranean, between October 1937 and February 1938. This was his last journey to sea, probably because of World War II. The painting is inscribed 'Cas' verso, and artist's monogram.
