A 'Diadem'-class cruiser
A stern view of one of the later 'Diadem' class 1st-class protected cruisers. There were four of these: 'Amphitrite', 'Argonaut', 'Ariadne' and 'Spartiate' (all 1898), and they could be distinguished from the earlier four 'Diadems' by the bulwark round the aft superstructure and by the quarterdeck guns being mounted on a small platform. The date has to be 1907-14 because the platform low on the mainmast was fitted in 1907. The location shown is probably the South Railway Jetty at Portsmouth.
