Seascape from the 'Castilian'

A sketch from the 'Castilian'. It uses colour to capture the dramatic effects of sunset. The calm sea is shown with little detailing, although it darkens closer to the horizon. The sky is pink at the horizon with yellow above. A thin dark-blue wash across the top of the painting indicates cloud cover. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Castilian', from London to the Mediterranean, between October 1937 and February 1938. This was his last journey to sea, probably because of World War II. The painting is inscribed with the artist's monogram bottom right, and 'Castilian' verso.
