Study of heaving the starboard anchors home on HMS 'Iron Duke'
Inscribed by the artist 'Iron Duke' and 'Heave anchors home'. This loose wash study is a fairly accurae depiction of the starboard bow of the battleship 'Iron Duke' (1912). The forward anchor is not yet fully housed and the inscription shows that heaving them home for sea is what is in progress. The date could be any time between 1914 and 1930 but is most probably during the First World War.
