Seascape from the 'Castilian'

A sketch from the 'Castilian', capturing the dramatic effects of sunset. The calm sea is shown with little detailing, apart from small dashes of darker blue to indicate the waves. The sky is shown as a series of horizontal layers, from gradations of pink above the horizon streaked with thick white and yellow paint to a dramatic swirl of thinly painted blue paint and a lighter colour above. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Castilian', from London to the Mediterranean, between October 1937 and February 1938. This was his last journey to sea, probably because of World War II. The painting is inscribed with artist's monogram '17 Feb 38' lower right, and 'Cas' verso. See also BHC0187.
