A slightly distant port side view, taken from well abaft the beam, of the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company cruise ship Strathnaver (1931) at moorings in Grand Harbour, Malta. She has two accommodation ladders rigged to shell doors amidships and a steam passenger tender and one of her own boats are alongside the ladders. Lifeboat number 18 has been launched. The photographer is looking east-by-south from the Upper Barrakka in Valletta showing two vessels moored stern-on to Quarry Wharf in the foreground. They are both seen from high above the starboard quarter and on the right is the Italian passenger/cargo short sea liner Catalani (1929). In the centre is the German cargo liner Drachenfels (1921) coaling ship from lighters alongside with many men carrying sacks up steep planks to the bunker hatch between the bridge and the funnel. On the extreme left entering harbour and seen from off her starboard side is the Royal Navy fleet target service sloop Chrysanthemum (1917). Ricasoli and the Bighi Royal Navy Hospital are in the background.
