Dog racing on the aft promenade deck of the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929).
Dog racing on the aft promenade deck of the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929). At the starting post are six wooden greyhounds numbered 1 to 6 and painted in different colours, each accompanied by a passenger who makes the moves round a circular numbered track. In the centre of the track is a table with a trophy on it and a man seated at the table throws the dice to determine each move. A man standing at the table calls out the dog number and the number of moves forward it must make. Some passengers are seated in deckchairs round the track and a woman is sitting on Number 5 cargo hatch. On the port side of the deck is motor tender number 4 on its chocks. The photographer is looking down, to port and aft from the starboard side of the boat deck.
