Turtle racing on the aft promenade deck of the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929).

Turtle racing on the aft promenade deck of the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929). A hexagonal course is set out on deck using lengths of wood to mark the perimeter and a rectangular piece of plywood in the centre. The small live turtles with paper numbers on their backs are placed on the central board and the winner is the first to reach the perimeter board. The photograph, taken from deck level, shows four turtles in the outer track and one still on the centre board. Passengers are watching in the background.
