XR7 GPS Digital Chip Set
This XR7 GPS Digital Chip Set was made in 1998 and sold by Symmetricom. The chip technology was developed by a Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) research and development team working at Daventry, UK for its range of XR7 GPS products.
This was the first generationof GPS chip made by the GNSS Daventry group where an external CPU was not needed, a leap forward for the manufacture of affordable consumer GPS products. The chip features XR7 GPS System on Chip (SoC) technology consisting of a 12 channel GPS, an ARM 7 CPU, RAM, ROM, UARTS, time and frequency peripherals and a small section of programable hardware logic. In conjunction with the GPS RF MCM, the XR7 GPS Digital Chip Set allowed GPS-enabled products to be much smaller and lower power. Some external RAM and Flash was also needed.
