Seascape near Gibraltar, from the 'Ravenspoint'
A preliminary sketch of a seascape from the 'Ravenspoint', looking towards an empty horizon. The artist has created washes of colour to represent the sea and the movement of the waves becomes more pronounced towards the foreground. The waves have been indicated by very simple shapes more like a drawing than a painting. The preliminary nature of this sketch is indicated by the very unfinished appearance and by the presence of artist's notes top right. He records a particular moment in pencil which probably means a passing gust of wind suddenly made the ship judder from west to east. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Ravenspoint', from Liverpool to the Mediterranean between January and February 1935. The painting is inscribed in pencil 'Passing Gib[raltar] wind suddenly jumped W to E Jan/35', and 'Ravenspoint' on the verso.
