A close view of the side pawl windlass on the foredeck of the staysail spritsail barge Ethel Maud (1889) which is berthed at Hoo Marina, Kent, at low tide. The barge is berthed bow-on to the shore and the photographer is on board looking forward from the starboard side of the forward hatch. There are four turns of cord on the drum and a man is standing by the windlass holding the cord. He has his back to the camera. In the foreground is a rusty and broken stove pipe. Negatives numbers PM2365/7 to PM2369/28 were taken on the same occasion.
