Loss of HMS 'Queen Mary' at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916

Inscribed by the artist, 'Queen Mary', lower right, this monochrome drawing shows the pall of smoke left behind after this battlecruiser blew up and sank at the Battle of Jutland at 16.26, while under fire from the German battlecruisers 'Derfflinger' and 'Seydlitz' (not seen here). It is believed that two shells from 'Derfflinger' hit her forward and the forward magazines blew up. The forepart of the ship broke away at the foremast. The stern listed and rose up and as it heeled another explosion destroyed the after part of the ship. The ship in the distance to the left is the battlecruiser 'Princess Royal', which was ahead of 'Queen Mary'.
