Seascape

A rapid sketch capturing the fleeting effects of cloud over a calm sea. The artist has applied layers of horizontal, loosely applied wash to indicate the coloured bands in the sky, ranging from mauve, purple, yellow to pale blue. The sun is implied behind a mass of colour representing cloud on the right and golden highlights are scattered throughout the sky and also on the surface of the water. The depiction of the sea has been reduced to small sweeps of the darker blue paint on the right and left. The painting is inscribed with the artist's monogram bottom right.
