Seascape

A seascape showing the relationship between sea, ship and sky, in harmonizing tones of grey. The artist has used the length of the paper to create an impression of space and height. The calm sea occupies half the picture space, waves are implied by short diagonal brush strokes of colour. The sails of the ship are silhouetted on the left against the sky. The other half of the painting shows a large mass of grey, darkening at the base to indicate a solid mass of cloud. Light from the sun is hidden behind the clouds and plays across the surface of the water in the foreground. The painting is inscribed with the artist's monogram bottom right.
