Sketches of German destroyers interned in Gutter Sound, Scapa Flow
Two sketches on a single sheet, inscribed by the artist under the top one, 'Hun in Gutter Sound'. Both are views showing the ships in port-broadside aspect. Forty-three destroyers were interned with the rest of the German fleet in Scapa Flow from late November 1918 until scuttled there on 21 June 1919, though some were beached before sinking completely. Wyllie is likely to have done this drawing in November-December 1918 when guest of Admiral Sir Charles Madden on HMS 'Revenge', including as a witness to the German surrender in the Forth on 21 November.
