Seascape

A rapid sketch of sea and sky, looking towards an empty horizon. The sea occupies one quarter of the picture space and concentrates on the wave in the foreground, breaking along its length. The wave is painted as an undulating form, dark on the underside and with white paint on the crest to represent foam. Short diagonal lines of colour are positioned along the front of the painting to indicate the wave movement. The sky is painted with thin washes of colour with a darker mass on the left indicating cloud. The painting is inscribed with the artist's monogram lower right, and '16 M' verso.
